How many videos do you have in your library?

You can see the number of videos if you click "Videos" under "Browse" on the left of our homepage. You can choose any of our filters, and the number of videos will appear at the top. How can I learn/improve Spanish? (general)

To really learn Spanish, you need to actively use Spanish (think, speak, listen, read, write) as often as possible. FluentU is an awesome way to get that worthwhile, fun daily practice. Here are some resources and tips: - Listen to Spanish every day: podcasts | radio | music | TV shows - Speak with a language exchange partner (even online from home)! - Read often: how to read (for beginners) | magazines | blogs | easy books | novels - Keep it fun: practice with unconventional ways | watch movies | read comics | write daily Hope this gets you started! What’s the difference between “% Learned” and “% Mastered”?

“% learned” represents short-term retention, and “% mastered” is long-term retention. “% learned” can be increased by learning a video in a short period of time. On the other hand, % mastered can only be increased when you get questions correct based on the spaced repetition algorithm. The spaced repetition algorithm will show you questions when words appear as “Ready for Review” on your home screen.

Do you offer Latin American or Castilian Spanish?

We offer videos in both Castilian and Latin American Spanish. You can choose which videos to study if you'd like to study one exclusively. Use the search function on the website to search by country or topic (for example: Mexico, Argentina, music videos, etc...) I hope this helps!

Why do I see progress on videos when I've only just created my account?

FluentU's 'progress bar' acts as both a measure of how much of that video (or audio) you've learned with FluentU, and also how many of its vocabulary words you already know before watching it. A word can be considered 'already known' by FluentU in two ways: - You clicked 'Already Known' on the word while using FluentU - FluentU assumed you 'already knew' the word based on your language level settings If you click "Already Know" for a word, you can find it in your Already Known flashcard set by going to My Content.

Why aren't all words in the lesson included in the quiz?

In order to be included in the quiz, the words and captions must satisfy the following conditions: 1) Words are only tested if they are featured vocab (ie. underlined). 2) Captions are only tested if they include at least one featured vocab. If you'd like to get tested on words that aren't featured, you must manually add them to your My Vocab section or to any of your personalized flashcard deck. After you review them once there, they will be added to your Ready for Review section.

How do I change languages?

You can change your language on the website by: 1) Clicking on More > Settings on the left side panel. 2) Choose the language you're learning in the dropdown 3) Clicking on "Save Changes" You can go back and forth as much as you like. FluentU will keep track of your progress for each language.

How Can I See Less Pinyin and More Chinese Characters (Hanzi)

If you find that you see too much pinyin and want to see more Chinese characters (hanzi), then while you’re learning, just: 1) Make sure you are on your homepage: http://www.fluentu.com/chinese/home/ 2) Click on "More" on the left panel. 3) Click on Settings in the dropdown menu 4) Click on “Language settings” 5) Make sure that “Pinyin questions” is NOT selected As shown here:

How do I use FluentU?

The site is flexible to your needs. You can choose which videos to watch and learn from. That is to say, you create your own structure based on your needs. You can hover over words to see their translation. Clicking on them opens up a window with more info. The Ready for Review and My Vocab sections allow you to review words you've learned. You will sometimes see a tooltip that gives you helpful tips on using the site. You also have access to quizzes and personalized flashcards. In addition, you have access to printable PDFs of each video's transcript on the website. Many of our users focus on one video at a time, watching it over an over until they grasp the vocabulary and the pronunciation of each word, as well as how they fit in real-life sentences. This may work for you, or you might want to focus on vocab alone before you dive into listening comprehension. In that case ,you might want to start with our Newbie videos. Here's a video to show you some of the features of FluentU. It's a bit old, so it does not include some of the new features, but still helpful.
